The President is elected by the House of Representatives to  serve a 6-year term. In the the House of Federation 108 members are chosen by state assemblies to serve 5-year terms. In the the House of People's Representatives not more than 550 members of which minority Nationalities and Peoples shall have at least 20 seats are elected by direct vote to serve 5-year terms.

# of women candidates in 2010: 257/2174 (11.82%) down from 271 (14.69%) in 2005

- Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF)-ruling coalition

-8 party coalition of the opposition known as the Medrek, or the Forum

Registered voters 29,170,867

# of registered women voters: 14,067,022

3 of registered male voters: 15,103,845

Legal & Regulatory Framework

Chapter 11 article 102(1) Ethiopia constitution; Consolidated version of the Election Laws of Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Proclamation No. 111/1995, with amendments made by Proclamation NO. 438/2005

Political Parties Registration Proclamation, article 45  regulates the conditions under which Government support may be given to political parties and states including based on # of women candidates
