Speaking to the Council’s annual meeting in Geneva on protecting the rights of women and girls, the UN High Commissioner said it was an urgent task, and there needed to be zero-tolerance of gender-based violence.
He highlighted the alarming reality that female human rights defenders, women journalists, and those in public office and political decision-making positions, routinely come under “vicious” attack.

The UN Women and UNDP in South Sudan have launched a three-year programme to enhance women’s political participation and leadership.
The project, funded by Peacebuilding Fund, will support capacity building and advocacy efforts for women’s political participation.
It will also tackle the barriers that undermine and keep women, especially young women, at the margins of decision-making, political leadership, and participation.

The Status of Women Council of the NWT, leaderless for almost a year, says it now has a new president and a fresh executive director.
The council, an arm’s-length creation of the NWT government, has a mandate to advocate on behalf of women and provide feedback on territorial policies and legislation.
Former executive director Louise Elder departed in 2022, a period in which the organization’s activities slowed considerably. For some of that year, despite receiving ongoing funding, the Status of Women Council appeared to have no staff.

The 50-page document is intended as food for thought for the “Synod on Synodlity”, a gathering of bishops and lay people from around the world to be held in October 2023, before a second phase in October 2024.

The United Nations has designated 24 June as International Day of Women in Diplomacy. A new dataset was recently published that documents the share of women and men among the world's ambassadors. The research programme Gender in Diplomacy (GenDip) at the University of Gothenburg has developed the dataset, which will enable entirely new types of analyses.

India has ranked at 127 out of 146 countries in terms of gender parity -- an improvement of eight places from last year -- according to the World Economic Forum's annual Gender Gap Report, 2023. The World Economic Forum (WEF) ranked India at 135 out of 146 countries in the Global Gender Gap Index in the report's 2022 edition.
