Why are so many more men involved in politics than women?

The one-year Head Start for Young Women Program, now wrapping up, aimed to tackle that issue by jumpstarting the conversation with local high school and post-secondary students.

About 15 participants here in Ottawa developed workshops aimed at identifying why females say they don't get involved and come up with ways to overcome those reasons.

THIRTY Bahraini women are being trained to contest the upcoming parliamentary and municipal elections.

The four-phase programme, organised by the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), focuses on skills training, political empowerment of women, knowledge sharing and simulation activities.

The group, which includes prominent businesswomen, outgoing female MPs, public and private employees and social activists, has been undergoing training since January last year and their fourth session will end after Ramadan.

The National Institute of Legislative Studies (NILS) has identified the low number of women in Nigerian parliament as the reason for the failure of gender-based bills in the legislature, adding that it is unacceptable that only seven per cent of lawmakers are women.

Director general of the institute, Dr Ladi Hamalai, while speaking yesterday at a round table organised by NILS and UNDP/DGD for civil societies and community based organisations in Abuja said advocacy must be explored towards ensuring an increase in the next elections.
