Khadra Hussein Mohammad, 28, made history by becoming Somaliland’s first female National Deputy Prosecutor, dealing with a range of cases including theft, gang-related violence, and even terrorism.

Across Somaliland, UNDP is supporting a fundamental shift in legal education and professionalism in the justice sector. Khadra is one participant among many of UNDP’s long-term project, supporting development of an inclusive justice system and encouraging participation of women in the legal profession.

Algeria appoints four female army generals

Algeria has appointed three women army Generals, therefore becoming the Arab country with the biggest number of high-ranking female army commanders, Al Arabiya News Channel reported on Tuesday.

The nomination of the three generals, whose names were not revealed, come as part of a move seen as a sign of the liberalization of Algeria’s closed military organization.

A fourth general was appointed by the Algerian President Abdel Aziz Bouteflika in Nov. 2010 as the first general of the Armée Nationale Populaire (ANP) or People’s National Army.

With support from UN Women’s Fund for Gender Equality, the Network of NGOs in Trinidad and Tobago is training women to be more effective in running for election. They seek to learn the rules, use the rules and change the system.

Like a DJ, she stands aboard the campaign truck, microphone in hand, singing along “we’re ready” and dancing to soca, calypso and dancehall rhythms, popular even during elections in Trinidad and Tobago.

Women in Zanzibar will have more courage to take part in future elections, should the BRIDGE training introduced in Zanzibar be effective.

Speaking at the opening of the five-day BRIDGE training on 'Gender and Elections' to members of the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) and women activists, senior members of ZEC said it was a timely and crucial capacity building.

On May 27, the National Democratic Institute hosted the 2014 HOPE Fellows for a presentation titled, “When Legislation is Not Enough: Addressing Gaps in Implementation of Kosovo’s Laws on Gender Equality.” Speaking directly to the topic of realizing gender equality in Kosovo, the Fellows shed light on four main issue areas: 1) implementing written law: 2) strengthening the rule of law; 3) combating social norms; and 4) producing realistic action plans.

This was discussed at the Fiji Women’s Forum Candidate Strengthening Workshop in the Holiday Inn in Suva, today. Representatives from Political parties met to discuss and support the women candidates that have been announced or with the intention of running through the political party. FemLink Coordinator, Sharon Bhagwan Rolls says the workshop is to also provide for spot for campaign organizers as well.
