Zimbabwe: Parliament, Women University Sign Memorandum of Understanding

Parliament and the Women's University in Africa yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding in which the institution will offer various educational programmes to parliamentarians and staff. The agreement was signed by WUA vice-chancellor Professor Hope Sadza, Speaker of the House of Assembly Mr Lovemore Moyo and President of the Senate, Ms Edna Madzongwe.

Mr Moyo welcomed the signing of the agreement.

The Centre for Democratic Development (CDD) has launched a program to train women to spearhead citizenship education towards the promotion of peace, transparency and credibility of the December elections.

Dubbed “Promoting democratic citizenship to enhance elections peace, transparency and credibility in Ghana”, it aims at building the capacities of selected women from 15 electoral-violence prone districts to create more awareness about the need for peace.

In Pakistan, where instability, distrust, violence and political rivalries can impede interaction among political parties, women and young people — the majority of the population — often have difficulty making their voices heard.

According to some estimates, more than 60 percent of Pakistanis are under the age of 35. Yet women and young people seldom have leadership opportunities or seats on decision making bodies.

THE Jamaica Women's Political Caucus (JWPC), through its Institute for Public Leadership (IPL) programme, has organised a training seminar for active and aspiring women in politics. The programme - funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) - will promote the participation of confident, competent women as frontline politicians and campaign managers/fund-raisers.

In a bid to lend support to the process of electoral reform in Tunisia as preparations get under way for the election of a Constituent Assembly on 24 July 2011, the IPU dispatched an expert mission to the country from 22 to 24 March 2011. Following consultations with Tunisian women politicians, members of civil society organizations and representatives of local and international youth movements, the mission met with the subcommittee tasked with writing the draft electoral law.
