Egypt's National Council for Women will start a training program to enhance women's political participation in the country's upcoming parliamentary elections.

The program, which starts in November, aims to prepare over 1000 female politicians and activists to run for parliament, teaching them leadership skills and educating them on parliament, campaigns and crisis and time management.

The number of women running for public office should get closer to 50 per cent, says the P.E.I. Advisory Council on the Status of Women.

The council has produced a new municipal election guide for the 2012 elections called "Women Care for Communities."

Women currently make up about 30 per cent of the municipal politicians on Prince Edward Island, a much higher percentage than in provincial and federal politics, but still well short of their proportion of the population.

An entrepreneur who turned to politics, Falguni Rajput, 39, felt she wasn’t getting anywhere despite spending five years as a treasurer in the women’s wing of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Vasai-Virar, Maharashtra. Then she found out about a course at IIM-Bangalore promising to churn out “professional politicians” in three months.

A four-day capacity building workshop organized for aspiring female parliamentary candidates in the country opened at Akosombo on Wednesday.

The workshop brought together aspiring female parliamentary candidates of the National Democratic Congress, the New Patriotic Party, the Convention Peoples Party, the Progressive Peoples Party and the Peoples National Convention.

US Department of State's Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women Issues Melanne Verveer will launch Grassroots Women's Political Leadership Forum: South Asia Regional Women's Political Leadership Summit at the Asian University of Women in Chittagong on Sept 9.

Grassroots women leaders from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka will take part in the 10-day programme on development of political leadership.
