The right to vote and the right to stand for election are two fundamental elements of democracy. Notably, many countries did not afford women the right to vote until the 20th Century. Even today, universal suffrage is not a given right in all countries, and women often face obstacles that undermine their participation in political and electoral processes. There are various ways to support women in overcoming these obstacles. Such methods include revising the electoral system used, applying affirmative action mechanisms such as quotas, improving voter education for women and training political candidates. The new batch of MPs to take their seats in Spain’s Congress will include more women than ever before – almost but not quite as many as men.

With all the votes counted on Monday morning, it is now clear that 46.8 percent of elected members of parliament will be women.

There will be 164 women in the lower chamber sitting alongside 186 men – 26 more women than there were in the last legislature.

On Monday, September 10, in the nation’s capital, Higher Heights and the Brookings Institution—a nonprofit policy think tank—unveiled a major new report: Claiming Seats at the Table: Black Women’s Electoral Strength in an era of Fractured Politics.
