Elections

The right to vote and the right to stand for election are two fundamental elements of democracy. Notably, many countries did not afford women the right to vote until the 20th Century. Even today, universal suffrage is not a given right in all countries, and women often face obstacles that undermine their participation in political and electoral processes. There are various ways to support women in overcoming these obstacles. Such methods include revising the electoral system used, applying affirmative action mechanisms such as quotas, improving voter education for women and training political candidates. USA: New LGBTQ Gallup data reveals enormous gaps in political representation

New Gallup polling data shows 7.1 percent of the U.S. population identifies as LGBTQ – up from 5.6 percent in 2020. The new data, released yesterday, further reveals the enormous gap in LGBTQ elected representation in the U.S., where just 0.2 percent of elected positions are held by LGBTQ people. Currently, there are only 1,021 LGBTQ elected officials serving nationwide.

Liberia: National Elections Commission, political parties sign protocol to protect women in politics

The National Elections Commission (NEC) and political parties executives have signed the violence against women in elections and politics, the (VAWIE/P) Protocol. The signing of the VAWIE/P Protocol, commits political parties to fully implement, and popularized the Protocol throughout the country. The Gender Section of NEC, in collaboration with UN Women organized the Buchanan City Hall program, and was witnessed by several elections stakeholders on Friday, 18 February 2022.
