Local governments are in a unique position to contribute to the global struggle for gender equality by improving the status of women around the world. Local Governments are the level of governance closest to the citizens and as service providers and employers have an important role in creating the conditions that encourage women’s political participation. On September 2015, the UN Sustainable Development Summit approved 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. SDG5 aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls by 2030. In particular, Target 5.5. aims to “Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life”.
