India: Gender row; Women's panel seeks cancellation of MPPSC appointments

Source:

Dealing with a typical case of its kind, Madhya Pradesh State Women's Commission has recommended that the state Public Service Commission (PSC) should cancel selection of all male candidates-who were appointed as deputy collectors- but received less marks as compared to the women candidates.

The panel recommended that all the women who were deprived from appearing in interviews despite having scored more marks than their male counterparts in the state civil services examination be invited for interviews and appointed accordingly.

The recommendation came after Sunita Jain, a state civil services aspirant, approached the commission, pointing out that 80 women, including her, were deprived from appearing in interviews despite having scored higher marks than their male counterparts in their respective categories in the examinations held between 2003 and 2009. She also pointed out that the "cut-off marks" of female candidates were higher than the "cut-off" for males in nine different examinations conducted by state PSC during the last five years.

On August 6, TOI had reported this case of alleged gender discrimination by the MP Public Service Commission (MPPSC). Independent MLA Paras Saklecha had raised this issue in the state assembly, claiming that it was a 'unique case in which men have been benefited out of reservation meant for women".
