Zimbabweans say yes to new Constitution strong on gender equality and women's rights

“As a woman of Zimbabwe, I personally wanted a Constitution that is fit for me,” said Zimbabwe’s Deputy Minister of Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development and Member of Parliament, Jessie Majome, who participated in Zimbabwe’s Constitution-making process as part of the Select Committee of Parliament that facilitated the process.

Acting Head of UN Women appointed

Following the announcement of her departure by Michelle Bachelet, founding Executive Director of UN Women, the UN Secretary-General has designated Lakshmi Puri, Assistant Secretary-General and UN Women Deputy Executive Director, as the Acting Head of the organization, until further notice. Ms. Puri took on her new role as of 26 March 2013.

128th IPU Assembly STATEMENT ON SEXUAL VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

IPU unanimously endorsed a statement on sexual violence at its 128th Assembly to signal its on-going commitment to tackling this scourge. Recent widely-reported cases have highlighted the urgency of taking -action. The statement was read out by Mr. F. Cordero Cueva, President of the National Assembly of Ecuador and of the 128th IPU Assembly.

In collaboration with the UNDP, UNWomen, Australian Aid and Norwegian Embassy, the National Rural Development Programme launched project which aimed at providing advance education to 250,000 voters in Sindh especially the marginalised voters, including women, youths and minorities in five districts - Malir, Hyderabad, Badin, Khairpur Mirs and Dadu.

Record Number of Women MPs Attend 128th IPU Assembly

A record number of women MPs attended the 128th IPU Assembly in Quito, Ecuador, breaking the 200 mark for the first time ever. The 210 women MPs at the Assembly represented 33 per cent of all MPs attending. It was the first time the proportion of women MPs had been as high. The Quito gathering also witnessed a growing trend of better balanced delegations in terms of gender representation.
