From March 7-10, iKNOW Politics participated in the International Colloquium on Women’s Empowerment, Leadership Development, International Peace and Security hosted by President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (Liberia) and President Tarja Halonen (Finland). Over 800 representatives of civil society groups, national and international women’s organizations and governments from Liberia and around the world attended the event.
iKNOW Politics was displayed in a small hut made from bamboo and palm leaves in a field adjacent to the Stadium. The display was well attended, with many Liberian women’s groups stopping to ask questions, and President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf even came by the booth on the second day of the conference. On March 10th, iKNOW Politics held a three-hour side event attended by about 35 women, almost all from Liberia. iKNOW Politics screened the film on Testimonials of Women in Politics and then had a question and answer session with Catherine Mabobori from Burundi who was profiled in the film. Alomiza Ennos-Barr , Member of the Liberian House of Representatives and Chair of the Women’s caucus, also gave a speech. Following these speeches, almost all the women in the room passed around the mic to one another and told their own stories and experiences in a very up-beat and supportive environment.
