The number of women who registered as candidates for Afghanistan's upcoming parliamentary election is up by around 20 percent over the last poll, an official said Thursday.
Of the 2,447 people who have registered to run in the September election, 386 are women, said Fazel Ahmad Manwai, the chairman of the Independent Election Commission (IEC).
"In the last elections in 2005 we had 328 women candidates. Now we have 386 of our sisters registering," he told reporters. Afghanistan is set to hold a parliamentary election in September, after the ballot was postponed from the original May date.
