Czech Republic: NGO campaign calls for more women in politics

Source:

The Forum 50%, promoting equal representation of women and men in influential positions, has launched a campaign in support of the introduction of quotas for women in politics, its representatives told reporters yesterday.

They want to achieve at least 30 percent of women on the lists of election candidates. Moreover, a woman should be in one of the first two top positions with a high chance of being elected.

The campaign entitled "Time for a Change" includes a series of interviews with famous personalities who support quotas for women, such as former constitutional judge Eliska Wagnerova, documentary film director Olga Sommerova, former Czech EU commissioner Vladimir Spidla and opposition Social Democrat (CSSD) presidential candidate Jiri Dienstbier.

The NGO also presented an animated spot on the Internet social networks to explain the importance of quotas. Support for the proposal can be expressed on the the NGO's website.

Marcela Adamusova, from Forum 50%, stressed that quotas should not give preferential treatment to one group at the expense of another but they should remove discrimination and inequality.
