India: Education and Political Experience Help Women to Get Party Tickets

There's no denying that some male corporators who cannot contest the forthcoming civic elections owing to the 50 per cent reservation for women have perforce fielded the womenfolk from their households in their wards. But for a number of women, getting the ticket has been a reward for their grassroots level work done over the years while some women candidates, fresh entrants in the election fray, have been handpicked chiefly for their sound educational background.

According to Vandana Chavan, NCP city unit chief, while there have been efforts to give preference to women who have worked at the grassroots level, at times due to lack of candidates we have no choice but to select someone from the same family for contesting the elections.

Mathkari, however, pointed out that kith and kin of corporators have not been given the ticket but due to the 50 per cent reservation for women there was no other option but to rope in the family members. However the elections will be different as efforts have also been made to select some candidates who have no political background and newcomers who have excelled in academics.
