YOUTH Agenda Kenya has decried lack of young women participation in running political parties in Kenya. The group said despite many parties that had applied for provisional certificates meeting the two thirds gender requirement on membership women’s role in the same parties’ are ‘simply cosmetic.’
In a report released yesterday, the group said even though statistical data collected from political parties and the Registrar of Political Parties’ office indicated young women form 47 per cent of the total number of youths registered as voters, their participation in political affairs of their respective parties was not visible. “It terms of numbers, young women do appear to have representation in political parties. The problem lies with their level of participation and roles they play within these parties. A quick assessment shows that the numbers are merely cosmetic as party politics remain male dominated even within the youth leagues,”said Susan Kariuki, the Youth Agenda chief executive.
