Women’s representation in elected bodies often leads to an increase in policies that address women’s priorities and promote women’s economic, social and political empowerment. Following the 2011 uprising, Tunisian women were elected in historic numbers to the National Constituent Assembly (NCA). Thanks to their efforts, Article 46 of Tunisia’s new constitution commits the state to strive for gender parity in all elected offices. With elections on the horizon, Tunisian women have a historic opportunity to cement those gains. Formed in 2011, the Aswat Nisaa organization is working to empower Tunisian women politicians at the local level.
