Ladies and gentlemen of the press, on behalf of the National Steering Committee (NSC) of Project Swift Count, it is our pleasure to welcome you to this press conference to report on our observation findings for the February 25, 2012, Cross River gubernatorial election.

As you already know, Project Swift Count is jointly carried out by the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Justice Development and Peace/Caritas (JDPC), the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and Transition Monitoring Group (TMG). Thus reflecting the rich diversity of Nigeria, it brings together Christians and Muslims, as well as organizations with citizen election observation and legal expertise.

The first UN conference, a two-day meeting in Thimphu saw senior government officials, mostly women, from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Norway and Nepal, discuss the promotion of women’s political leadership and governance in India and south Asia. The participants and presenters debated the value of a quota for Bhutan.

UN Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (UN Women) regional program director, Anne F Stenhammer, said quota for women to partake in politics was not important.

“But what’s important, is women’s rights and correct decision making in the society,” she said, adding, in some countries, it had proven to have brought about change in women’s participation in politics and leading the country. “Even in terms of growth of a nation’s happiness and development.”

15 Mar 2012 - At the United Nations 2005 World Summit, leaders of all nations agreed on two things highly relevant to today's situation in Syria. They reaffirmed democracy as a universal value. And they agreed on the doctrine of responsibility to protect. They stated a "clear and unambiguous acceptance by all governments of the collective international responsibility to protect populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity," and their "willingness to take timely and decisive collective action for this purpose, through the Security Council, when peaceful means prove adequate and national authorities are manifestly failing to do it."
