Nicola Sturgeon: 'I want to help women'

Source:

Nicola Sturgeon has been in the job only three months but already she is eyeing her legacy. “Being the first woman First Minister is a big responsibility and I feel the weight of that acutely. I’m determined to use that position to help further the ability of other women to get on in their chosen field.”

She argues it is time to use force to get more women into politics and the boardroom: “Quotas are necessary. They’re a blunt tool. But if we had a real meritocracy now we’d have a gender balance.

SÃO PAULO—This year, for the first time in Brazil’s history, two women—incumbent President Dilma Rousseff and former environment minister Marina Silva—had a serious chance of winning the presidency. Marina, who sought the country’s highest office after the death of her running mate in August, ultimately fell short, coming in third in voting this week behind Dilma and Aécio Neves, who now enter a runoff.

Women miss out in NSW parliament (Australia)

Source:

The heady days when Sydney women looked up to a female prime minister, female premier, governor and governor-general are long gone.

There is just one female cabinet minister in Canberra. And now the NSW parliament is likely to emerge from the next election with its worst result for women’s representation in the upper house in decades.

NSW Labor has ignored Labor’s rule that 40 per cent of candidates pre-selected for winnable seats must be women. The Nationals and Liberals' merit-based promotion of female candidates has similarly failed.
