A new background paper from the World Bank written by Susan Markham, NDI’s director of women’s political participation, examines the status of women in politics and makes the case for the full and equitable participation of women in public life. The paper, entitled Women as Agents of Change: Having Voice in Society & Influencing Policy, reviews existing data, identifies the barriers that prevent women’s political participation and analyzes strategies that have been used to increase it.

The idea that white liberal men don’t bring their own built-in biases from their own (substantially more privileged) lived experiences to politics, and are some kind of neutral group is absurd. LAGOS - Nigerian women have been told to go for elective positions as they had achieved the 35 per cent affirmative appointive positions in line with UN recommendation.

Mrs. Mairo Amshi, a Lagos-based gender activist, told newsmen that “there is hope in the political activities of women especially with the support of the present administration.

ISLAMABAD: To add to the hype surrounding local bodies elections, non-government organisation and human rights groups have urged the election commission to prepare and release gender disaggregated data.

AU wants more women representation in Mauritanian politics

Nouakchott, Mauritania - An African Union (AU) observer mission to the Mauritanian municipal and legislative polls, led by former Algerian Prime Minister, Ahmed Ouyahia, has recommended that the Mauritanian government should create an environment which will allow more women participate in the country's political process.

Speaking Tuesday to the media, Ouyahia, who monitored the elections in November and December, said the measure would put the country on the international map as one which encourages gender parity.
