Rwanda Enacts Friendly Law for New Mothers

Rwanda, leader on women’s political empowerment, have recently passed a new law giving rights to new mothers. Thus, the new maternity protection law gives mothers a one year leave plus a payment that equals 100% of the salary. According to Yvonne Uwayisenga, deputy vice-chairperson of the Chamber of Deputies’ Committee on Political Affairs and Gender, this law represents a major success for women’s rights.

Gahonzire is deputy commissioner of the Rwanda Correctional Service, which runs prisons in the country that 20 years ago was torn apart by 100 days of killing.

In Rwanda, women paved the way to reconciliation

Twenty years ago tonight, the assassination of Rwanda’s president set in motion the most gruesomely efficient genocide in modern history. The anniversary reminds us of the brutality of those 100 days — 800,000 people killed because of their Tutsi ethnicity, or because they stood up for their neighbors.

But we are also reminded of the less-known stories of the extraordinary women who took the lead in rescuing Rwandan society over the past two decades.

The call was made on Tuesday by the Minister for Gender and Family Promotion, Oda Gasinzigwa at the closure of a two-day workshop on building capacity of prisons warders on international peacekeeping missions.

The workshop attracted delegates from 25 countries and representatives of international organisations. The event aimed at exploring reforms on how to train warders for peace-keeping missions.

Rwanda: Women Leaders Elect New Representatives to Council

The National Women Council (NWC) has elected two new members to its board.

Beatrice Mukasine and Liberatha Kakuze were elected to the council executive for a five-year term during a general assembly on Thursday at Nyandungu in Kigali.

Mukasine was elected as the new national coordinator for NWC, replacing Francesca Tengera, who was elected to Parliament in the September polls.
