USA: New York Senate played politics with women's rights

Constituents around the state have been receiving mail declaring that the state Senate has passed historic women's legislation. The Assembly passed the 10-point Women's Equality Act in its entirety, but the state Senate failed to do so. The state Senate passed nine separate bills and refused to even discuss the 10th: the critical reproductive health component supported by 850 organizations and businesses from around the state.

Women are outnumbered in state legislatures around the country, particularly in Michigan, where female representation is at its lowest point in more than two decades.

As MLive reported Sunday, women inside and outside the state legislature are working to recruit new female candidates. But as of today, women hold only 28 out of 148 seats in the Michigan Legislature.

Lindy Boggs was only 24 when she arrived in Washington as the top political adviser to her husband, newly elected to Congress.

Thirty-two years later, the seat became hers after Hale Boggs was presumed dead in a plane crash, and she made her own mark as an advocate for women and minorities.

Boggs died Saturday at the age of 97, according to ABC News, where Boggs' daughter Cokie Roberts is a political contributor.

At a summer lunch with reporters in her Capitol conference room, Rep. Nancy Pelosi rolled out an ambitious economic agenda for women with next year’s congressional elections in mind.

She launched a legislative agenda of family-friendly policies, such as paycheck fairness for women, an increased federal minimum wage, and President Obama’s proposed early childhood education initiative.
