The two biggest parties have chosen their candidates: Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet, of the center-right Union pour un Mouvement Populaire (UMP), and Anne Hidalgo of the Parti Socialiste (PS).

Two other women are also widely expected to fight for the mayor seat against candidates from several smaller parties: Marielle de Sarnez of the centrist MoDem and the Green party leader Cecile Duflot.

In an extremely aggressive speech in the aftermath of primaries defeat, Argentine president Cristina Fernandez blasted the media for misinterpreting electoral results, charged against the Mayor of Tigre Sergio Massa who was the big winner on Sunday, pressed for full commitment from her allies and promised more of the same in support of the ‘socially inclusive model’.

Stephanie Banister, dubbed as the "Sarah Palin of Australia", has dropped out of the election race on August 10 after committing several interview blunders and calling Islam a country. 

The 27-year-old One Nation candidate was campaigning for only two days when she gave an interview to Seven News Network. Her interview video went viral on the Internet and viewers tagged her as "Australia's Sarah Palin" who was also mocked for her interview mistakes when she contested for US vice-presidential position in 2008.

India may boast a woman President, Prime Minister and Speaker, but when it comes to selecting candidates, key political parties still have a long way to go.

In the past 10 years, only 7 per cent or 4,148 candidates out of the 62,847 candidates were women, says an analysis. Of these, 675 won to become MPs or MLAs.
