Women Leading at the Local Level in Mexico
Women Leading at the Local Level in Mexicowith Laura López Padilla Keila González Susan Markham Jim Swigert Thursday, May 30, 2013 In July 2012 elections, Mexican women made historic strides in securing seats in the country’s national legislature, where they now account for more than 36 percent of the membership. However, women are still struggling to realize similar gains at the state level, where just 6.1 percent of the nation’s 2,400 municipal presidents are women. The Network of Support for Women Municipal Leaders (Red de Apoyo a Mujeres Municipalistas, REAMM) and NDI have been working to address this challenge by providing training for local women political leaders, supporting advocacy campaigns to secure government funding for women’s leadership, and helping parties to better recruit and prepare women leaders. Please join representatives from REAMM and NDI for a panel discussion on the promotion of women’s leadership at the local level from the perspectives of civic advocacy, party reform, and the role of the government. Please RSVP via this webform. Please direct any questions about the event to Melanie Pitkin at mpitkin@ndi.org.
