INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY 2013: Women as agents of change

International IDEA joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day 2013 with the theme: “Women as Agents of Change”.

Despite progress over the years where women perform visible and instrumental roles in certain contexts and stages of political transformation, there is still widespread evidence of the continued exclusion of women from the critical decisions that shape the outcomes of these transformations. However, expanding women’s rights and their ability to influence their environment goes beyond the formal political channels, which are often limited by unfavourable institutional structures as well as social norms and beliefs regarding gender roles.
