Radio Drama Promotes women and youth political participation in northern Nigeria

In one episode of the Nigerian radio drama Dukan Karshe, a young man and woman decide to run for their local council to correct injustices, including government funds being diverted from schools and hospitals to line the pockets of local politicians. “It is time for us as women to take part fully in politics,” the woman says. “We are the mothers. We know what is good for our community.”

She arrived the Ekiti State political firmament unheralded, but she left in blaze of glory after breathing her last on Saturday, 6 April following a long battle with cancer.
OlufunmilayoAdunniOlayinka was born to Chief Festus ObafemiFamuagun, a native of Ado-Ekiti and Mrs. Grace AdetutuFamuagun, who hails from Ido-Ekiti at Ile-Abiye Hospital and Maternity in the Ekiti State capital on 20 June, 1960.

Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, who represents Abia Central senatorial districts in the 7th Senate, is a strong voice, especially among the eight women in the chamber, and one of the aspirants said to be lining up for the Abia governorship race in 2015. However, she told BRIDGET CHIEDU ONOCHIE in Abuja that when she gets to the bridge in 2015, she would cross it, even as she believes that having more women in decision-making positions, including positions of Senate President, Speaker and even IG of Police may douse the socio-political and economic tensions besetting the nation.
