Solomon Islands election candidate says women want change

Source:

A Solomon Islands politician says women in her country are fed up with not benefitting from any of the money that passes through the hands of her male counterparts.

Rhoda Sikilabu is a former deputy premier of Isabel province and now a provincial assembly member who is standing in next year’s general election.

She has just completed an exchange to Melbourne under the Pacific Women’s Parliamentary Partnerships scheme - something she says is proving vital in helping her to improve the lives of her constituents.

Quotas for women in parliament could 'effect real change', UK

Source:

Quotas should be introduced to increase the numbers of women in parliament and public life to address the "dire" gender balance in Westminster, authors have told the Edinburgh international book festival.

Kamila Shamsie, the novelist, and Kate Mosse, the author and founder of the Women's Prize for Fiction, argued that quotas for women in parliament, though according to Mosse "a blunt tool", could "effect real change".

Conservatives Have A 'Women' Problem, That Can Only Be Fixed With Gender Politics, USA

Source:

It’s difficult to find a politician, politico or pundit who denies Republicans have a “women” problem. At best, it seems Republicans fail to engage with women voters effectively, and at worst conservatives seem determined to alienate large swaths of the female electorate with outrageous or ill-considered comments.

Women In Politics: Coverage Focuses More On Personality Traits, Less On Issues, Study Finds

When female candidates are running for office, is the media coverage different?

Yes, according to new research led by Johanna Dunaway, an Assistant Professor of Political Science and Mass Communication of Louisiana State University.

The study, published in the most recent issue of Political Research Quarterly, found that the gender of the people running in an election influenced newspaper articles about the candidates. Articles about female candidates included more discussion of character traits than articles about male candidates.

GCC Women: Challenging Stereotypes

Source:

Arab women are not new to being typecasted.  For most they are "burqa clad imprisoned women with little say inside or outside the home". This constant stereotyping leaves many people in the Middle East, both men and women, confused and bewildered as to why critics around the world, especially in the West, think so lowly of Arab women. Such pigeonholing remains strong and much needs to be done to present the true picture.

Don't blame women if we ignore what passes for politics

Source:

A report claims women are less interested in current affairs. Maybe that's because of the level of discussion. Why are so many women so detached from politics? It is a mystery and one that only deepens with the publication of Gender Matters Globally, a study that compared the gender gap in political knowledge in 10 different nations and now, having concluded its research, uses the word "grim" to describe the prospects for female awareness in developing countries.
