Advocacy & Lobbying

We’ve come a long way since the early 1970s when just a handful of women held political leadership positions. The November 2022 election cycle was a critical turning point for women in politics.  First, we made history with a record number of women winning and now serving in Congress, state legislatures, and executive positions. Second, many of these women now hold key leadership positions, including eighteen women who hold the top leadership position in their chamber, such as Senate President or Speaker of the House. The 2023 edition of the global Women Peace and Security Index (WPS Index) scores and ranks 177 countries in terms of women’s inclusion, justice, and security.

No country performs perfectly on the WPS Index and the results reveal wide disparities across countries, regions, and indicators. The WPS Index offers a tool for identifying where resources and accountability are needed most to advance women’s status - which benefits us all.

The WPS Index is published by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security and the PRIO Centre on Gender, Peace and Security with support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Even before Niger’s political crisis this summer, an estimated 10.6 million people, or 41 per cent of the population, faced moderate to acute food insecurity. The National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland took power on 26 July, and there are now more than 500,000 internally displaced people, 84 per cent of whom are women and children.

“This crisis threatens to ruin my business and drive me into food and financial insecurity”, said a woman identified as Hadiza, who makes a living importing clothes from Nigeria and spoke on a podcast aired as part of the women’s rights digital campaign “Niger Femmes Filles Paix” (Niger Women Girls Peace).
