Ngcuka has called for democratic governments such as South Africa to advance gender equality, saying women’s political participation will not only lead to improved access to education and health, but will combat gender-based violence.
“Open democracies foster an enabling environment for women’s political participation, policy and law shaping, as well as the protection of women’s rights and the creation of equal opportunities,” she told delegates attending Women Deliver Conference in Rwanda this week.

Leading civil society organizations, the Initiative for Research, Innovation, and Advocacy in Development (IRIAD) and Partners West Africa, Nigeria (PWAN), have urged the Federal Government to prioritize the domestication and implementation of the Maputo Protocol to protect women’s rights.
This call was made in a joint statement issued to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Protocol, also known as the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa.
The statement, co-signed by Princess Hamman-Obels (IRIAD) and Kemi Okenyodo (PWAN), emphasized the urgent need to intensify efforts in combating gender-based violence and ensuring women’s rights are fully realized.

A conglomeration of Liberian women from diverse backgrounds have called on political parties to fully implement the Memorandum of Understanding they sign with the National Elections Commission (NEC) to fully implement Section 4.5 of the Elections Law of Liberia.
In a petition to NEC, the women's organizations including rural women, market women, and national women groups, expressed concerned over the low level of women aspirants who have completed their candidate registration process with the NEC, and called on political parties to implement the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) they signed with NEC on Section 4.5 of the Elections Law of Liberia on May 11, 2023.

Mufuliat Fijabi argues for improved representation of women at all levels of decision-making.
Women’s involvement and representation in governance in Nigeria, particularly in politics, continues to be a growing concern, as the numbers continue to shrink, whether it is for elective or appointive positions.
Women make-up about half of the entire population of the country, according to a recent report by the World Bank Group. They make-up 49.5 per cent of Nigeria’s population.
Hence, if the statistics by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is anything to go by, with Nigeria’s population pegged at 223.8 million, then, the total number of women would be 110,781,000.

Once they won the right to vote, some women’s suffrage activists in the United States moved on to focus on how to direct this new electoral power. The League of Women Voters was established as a non-partisan association by members of the all-white National American Women Suffrage Association to throw its support behind “good government,” not just women’s issues.
One of the policy areas they made an impact on was environmental regulation. By mid-century, their activism played an important role in pressing politicians for regulation on water pollution.
However, as scholar Terrianne K. Schulte writes, their role in the pre-1960s environmental movement has been all but overlooked.
