President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday said the representation of women in politics should increase.” I want to draw your attention towards the subject of women’s representation in this House. When women are excelling in every field, their representation should also increase in politics. It is important to ensure participation of half of the population of the country for its overall development,” she added.

At a lecture Tuesday at the Memorial Union, Bonnie Stabile, associate dean for student and academic affairs and associate professor at the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University, spoke on the politics and policy around women in power, underrepresentation and rape culture.

Stabile discussed topics from her book, “Women, Power and Rape Culture: The Politics and Policy of Underrepresentation”, which was co-authored with graduate research assistant and doctoral candidate Aubrey Grant and published in September 2022.

WFD recommended that the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) should impress on the legislators to create laws that will use both incentives and sanctions to enhance political inclusion.

The Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD) has asked the National Assembly to introduce affirmative action bills that will create quotas for women, youth and persons with disabilities in elective and appointive positions.

The recommendation was contained in a WFD report titled; "A Study of Inclusive Practices of Nigeria's Political Parties (2023)". The report was released on Tuesday during a conference held for political parties in Abuja.
