Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Friday that she will run for reelection to another term in Congress as Democrats work to win back the majority in 2024.
Pelosi made the announcement before labor allies in the San Francisco area district she has represented for more than 35 years.

Mournful tributes are pouring in after the death of Monique Begin, a former cabinet minister and academic who died Friday at the age of 87.
In a statement Saturday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called Begin a “trailblazer for Canadian women.” Her election to Parliament in 1972 made her one of the first of three women from Quebec to serve in the House of Commons, he said.

An activist has called for all state governments to appoint women to their respective legislative assemblies to ensure greater female representation.
In 2021, Penang introduced an initiative called “Top-Up Women-Only Additional Seats”, which chief minister Chow Kon Yeow said will be implemented if less than 12 women were elected to its state assembly.

In early August, the Iraqi Communications and Media Commission issued a directive banning the use of the term “gender” in all public communications. It also recommended the replacement of the word “homosexuality” with “sexual deviance”.
The decision came on the back of an organised disinformation campaign in Iraqi media outlets largely owned or controlled by the dominant post-2003 political parties. The campaign linked the use of the term “gender” in Iraq with the “proliferation” of homosexuality, the “promotion” of transgender identities, “moral decay” and the violation of religious and national values.

Imagine a leader. What do you see? How are they presented? What are they wearing? Are they up on a platform or down on the ground? In uniform or in a dress? Are they regal and smart? Full frontal or turned to the side? If it’s a woman, what comes to mind? Last week, Theresa May’s official portrait, by the Persian-born British-based painter Saied Dai, was unveiled. I don’t know what I was expecting – but it definitely wasn’t this. At first glance, I found her appearance cold and androgynous, the style evoking that of wartime with its muddying palette and sharp angular shapes. The more I sat with it, the more I realised how good a painting it was, with incredible psychological insight into its subject and the times in which we are living.

Exactly two weeks ago, Zimbabwe held its harmonized elections in a process that ushered in new political players who will represent their constituencies in Parliament and councils for the next five years.
The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) aggregated results of participants which paints a grim picture on female participation and the percentage of those who won in recently conducted harmonised elections for both National Assembly and council seats.
