The right to vote and the right to stand for election are two fundamental elements of democracy. Notably, many countries did not afford women the right to vote until the 20th Century. Even today, universal suffrage is not a given right in all countries, and women often face obstacles that undermine their participation in political and electoral processes. There are various ways to support women in overcoming these obstacles. Such methods include revising the electoral system used, applying affirmative action mechanisms such as quotas, improving voter education for women and training political candidates. Despite an elaborate legislative and policy framework in Zimbabwe pushing for women’s participation in politics, the numbers from the nomination process show a regression at all levels of candidature compared to statistics recorded in 2018. Overall, 70 women are contesting for National Assembly seats, accounting for 11% of the 637 prospective candidates. In the 2018 general elections, women constituted 14.4% of the 1648 national assembly candidates.

When it comes to politics, Black women have always been “at the forefront of change.” In a post- Roe v. Wade world, that’s more true now than ever.

President Barack Obama has publicly acknowledged our import, remarking in a speech how Black women have historically “helped carry this country forward,” even though “we ‘weren’t always given a voice,’ much less celebrated.”
