A study conducted by local academics in San Diego County found that elected officials, especially women, are increasingly becoming targets of intimidation and threats on social media.– Researchers reviewed the Twitter accounts of elected officials dating back to 2018 and extracted around 13,000 aggressive tweets out of a cache of half a million.
Women were found to be three times more likely than men to be threatened over social media, with threats being personalized and sexualized in nature. Women of color faced particularly high levels of threats and harassment. The intimidation is coming from across the political spectrum, with moderates being targeted the most, followed by liberals and conservatives. The next phase of the survey will focus on brainstorming solutions to reducing threats, with a final report expected to be released in late July.
