GENDER minister Inonge Wina says the government is committed to increasing women participation in politics and decision-making positions.
Speaking when she officiated at the third Gender Protocol Summit and Awards ceremony in Lusaka yesterday, Wina said the government's commitment to gender equality was evidenced by the introduction of the National Gender Policy, which had strong commitments to regional and international instruments.
"My ministry is working with cooperating partners such as CSOs and the women movement to sensitize political parties and the general public on the importance of adopting women candidates during elections," Wina said.
She said government policies would be meaningless if political parties did not take up the challenge of including more women in their structures.
Wina also said civil society organisations played a vital role in advocating and supporting women's representation not only as advocates but also as organisations that could provide direct support.
