Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo to run for French president

The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, announced Sunday she’s running for French president.
Hidalgo, a Socialist who has led the French capital since 2014, promised to build “a fairer France.”
“With humility, conscious of the seriousness of our time, and to make our hopes a reality, I have decided to be a candidate for the presidency of the French Republic,” she said in a speech in the city of Rouen.
The next presidential election takes place in April and will involve two rounds of voting if no candidate wins an absolute majority in the first round.
President Emmanuel Macron has not yet announced he will run for a second term but is widely expected to do so.
According to POLITICO’s Poll of Polls of first-round voting intention, Macron leads the pack of potential candidates on 24 percent, one point ahead of far-right leader Marine Le Pen.
Hidalgo currently lies fifth place on eight percent, behind Xavier Bertrand of the center right and the far left’s Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
