But one place where women are faring better is in state legislatures. Across the nation, nearly one-quarter (24.2 percent) of all state legislators are women, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
There are nearly twice as many female Democrats in state legislatures (1,113) as female Republicans (636), and blue states elect far more women than red states. (Though it should be noted that Republicans have narrowed the gap in recent years.)
