At least 131 women are set to serve in the U.S. Congress in 2021, according to the Center for American Women and Politics, a unit of the Eagleton Institute of Politics at Rutgers University. The count surpasses the previous record of 127 women, first set in 2019. So far, the tally includes 100 Democrats and 31 Republicans. 29 women candidates remain—19 Democrats and 10 Republicans—in uncalled races. The numbers do not include non-voting delegates in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Across the parties, Democrats remain under their previous record of 106 women in the House, set in 2019 but Republicans have reached historic levels of representation in the House, surpassing their record with 31 women set to serve in the 117th Congress. The previous record was 30, set in 2006.
In the House, a record 106 women have already been elected—83 Democrats and 23 Republicans. The previous record for women in the House was 102, set in 2019. Democrats are under their record of 89 women House members, set in 2019, but Republican women are now close to breaking their record of 25 House members, set in 2006. As of now, 29 women House nominees remain in races that have not yet been called.
